Configure Nokia N900 with BSNL 3G/GPRS

There is no easy or automated way to configure GRPS in N900. You have to manually type in the settings.

Send an SMS to 58355 with the text "NOKIA N900 ". Enter pin "1111" to save the settings.
Unfortunately I was not able to find the change connection(GPRS) option anywhere. So let's do it the hard way. Once all settings are saved. I got the default connection as BSNLWAP. Let's proceed and modify this to use 3G.

  1. Click on the top left "Menu"  to bring the Main Menu.
  2. Now tap on the "Settings" to bring up the settings menu.
  3. Scroll down and tap the "Internet Connections" icon.
  4. Tap the "Connections" button.
  5. Select the "BSNLWAP" and then tap the "Edit" button  to bring up the Connection Wizard.
  6. Change the Name BSNLWAP to "bsnl_internet" and tap "Next" button to continue.
  7. Enter "gprssouth.cellone.in" in Access point name and move down to next field.
  8. Enter "ppp" in User name and leave others blank and tap on "Next" button to Continue.
  9. Click Finish to Save and exit the wizard.
  10. Click "Done" to come to Internet Connections.
  11. Preferably Leave the "Connect Automatically" to "Any Connection" and Enable "Swtich to WLAN when available" to swtich to your WLAN when available automatically.
  12. Click Save to close the menu and Restart the N900
  13. Try the new connection in browser.

Configuring BSNL 3G on your mobile

Hi Everybody,
Like me many would have found it difficult to setup/configure BSNL 3G services on your mobile. Hope this post helps.

Step 1: Clear out the default setting from your connection setting from your mobile. For Nokia it is: Menu->Tools->Settings->Connections->Access Points. Under this delete the BSNL INTERNET, BSNL MMS & BSNL WAP. This helps in removing duplication.

Step 2: Send an SMS to 58355 with the text " ". For eg. send NOKIA E71 to 58355 for Nokia E series 71 model mobile.

Step 3: As soon as you get the service settings from BSNL, open the settings and save it and also when prompted for "Set as Default" select "Yes". It might prompt you for the Pin to open the message, provide "1111" as the pin.

Step 4: Open your browser and start browsing by selecting "BSNL_INTERNET" as the default connection.

Note: The main setting required in this is selecting the Access Point as "gprssounth.cellone.in" and username as "PPP". This is also required for setting using Internet from laptop via your mobile.

In Chennai mostly you get around 1mbps to 850 kbps during the day and 1.2 mbps during the late night hours.
